90’s-Thread The Needle

Santogold and Amanda Blank have done a killer cover version of this L.L. track as part of Santo’s Diplo remix album, “Top Ranking”. Remember Diplo/MIA’s “Piracy Funds Terrorism”? This is part two, and just as great. The cover made me remember my glory days where I’d pop this jam in my tape player.
2 Unlimited didn’t name themselves that by accident, they really were all about pushing the limits. Their debut album and break out hit was called, “Get Ready!” but really, could anyone? They must of been on some quality Dutch (Hi Margot!) designer drugs. No no, no no no no, no no no no, there’s no limit. There really is no limits, reach for the stars kids.
The term “get hype” was big back in the 90’s. This 1990 King Bee track and the accompanying video define it’s meaning.

On another note, it’s time to bring back the, “Thread The Needle” and no, I’m not talking about sewing, although my mom did knit this cardigan, I’m talking about the dance.
I remember when I first saw it in a Kid N Play music video which I had recorded. I sat there on the rewind-pause, trying to figure it out.

A yotube search reveals, a) that there isn’t enough youtube vids of this, and b) that those stupid glow-stick rave victims have tried to make it into there own dance. It’s time to take the power back people.

Disco Funk.. .

Ahhh the soothing sounds of Disco Funk.. If you are unaware of the genre, I’d be advised.. it’s crack cocaine. Lillo Thomas has got to be one of the best. His music is just top shelf entertainment. I’d also recommend checking out his videos on youtube. It’s pretty difficult to get a hold of his music, but well worth the trouble. Those with limited time, check Amazon they have 2 of his “Best Of” c.d.’s for $500+ each.. check it –>here<–.. hilarious.

Also here’s a track you should check out.. Chubby Fingers’ have something special going on here with Diana Ross on the vocals.
I be illin’

Did you miss me? Okay, don’t answer that.
I’ve been on hiatus, sort of… somehow I was volunteered to participate in this. The stomach pain was so intense, it can only be described with imagery.
While being injected with my third dose of morphine (real talk, big up St Paul’s ER), this track here was looping in my head.
“Can’t nobody hooooold me down, ooooh no. I got to keep on mooovin!”

Oh yeah… the show wasn’t so bad either. It was pretty sweaty up in that mf’r.

yeah right..

Check out local hero, Rick McCrank, with some classic skating from Girl Skateboard’s “Yeah Right” video. Specifically, the first two sets.. he takes one set of stairs switch stance. isn’t that gnarly? Pro Skater for real..
Disco Party

I stumbled upon this track while listening to the James Murphy & Pat Mahoney Fabriclive:36 mix they did a year back.
Disco is alive and well as the two LCD Soundsystem / DFA‘ers prove. There’s a great cache of unearthed post disco, 1979-1983′ish gems mixed seemlessly with more recent stuff like Daniel Wang and their own material. Music lovers rejoice.
!!! Friday August 8th, the duo are bringing there dj talents to Vancouver @ Celebrities nightclub !!! $15 early bird tixs! event info here.
Get your grubby hands on the boys Fabric mix here.

Winnie needs a musical

My first winnie non-music related post / musical related post. If you missed out the first time the nice people over at Hulu have just unleashed Dr.Horrible to us all in full form. ( with limited commercial interuption mind you). In my opinion better than the dark knight. enjoy = )

the interview show: the cliks
Lucas Silveira, lead singer of The Cliks, has said, “rock is the best place to be who you are.” Rock has a long tradition of gender exploration from Bowie to Freddie Mercury to 80s metal bands. Lucas himself is one of the most visible transgendered persons (female to male) in the music industry.
That said, the Cliks are a straight up rock band and they have have done a killer cover of Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me A River.”
FYI: clit + dick = The Cliks!

Cof Cof, pass pass

Put this band on your radar! Valencia, Spain’s Cof Cof sound like the perfect party.
Its hard not to draw similarities to Bonde do Role, Yelle, and Hot Chip with their home made esthetic and perfect collision between electronic and organic. Lead singer, Ana Analogica’s Miss Kitten-esq lyrics and accent ain’t so hard on the ears either.
Purchase more Cof Cof here or scoop their whole album, “Who Said Party?” for free on their myspace! You’ll wish you had payed for it.
